National Volunteer Week: Dan Sheppard

National Volunteer Week: Dan Sheppard

This week we're celebrating all our awesome volunteers as part of National Volunteer Week! Wellington Free gained a dedicated and hardworking volunteer when Dan Sheppard moved to New Zealand.

Dan brought a refreshing level of excitement to continue helping in the ambulance sector – something that obviously grew from a number of years volunteering with the St John Ambulance UK team.

Now as part of the Wellington Free Event Medic team, he helps out at all sorts of events – from the big games at Westpac Stadium to Saturday morning footy, concerts, marathons and school fairs.

Although Dan is based in Lower Hutt, he has had some awesome opportunities to volunteer across the Wellington region.

“Volunteering is very important to me. It is a way to give back to the incredibly welcoming community I have found in New Zealand and a chance to help people in their time of need,” Dan says.

“It is also a great opportunity to go to new places and meet new people, and receive excellent clinical training.”

As well as being an Event Medic, Dan is also studying a PhD in Chemistry. This means managing his time is very important.

“Managing my time demands is a challenging task, but achievable with some forward planning. Part of what is great about being a volunteer in such an active service is that there is a variety of work to be done at different times,” he says.

Highlights during Dan’s time with Wellington Free include attending sporting events such as All Blacks rugby games, and being part of major incident training exercises involving all the emergency services.

“One particular happy and humbling moment for me was receiving a letter of thanks from the mother of patient I had treated. It is moments like this that make volunteering so rewarding and engaging.”
