Meet Board Member Dr Chris Masters

This Te Wiki Tūao ā-Motu National Volunteer Week, we’re introducing you to just some of the incredible team that generously give their time to support our services and the Greater Wellington and Wairarapa communities.

This includes the people who act at a Governance level on our Board of Trustees. Our Board meets quarterly to ensure the effective governance of all aspects of our service. Lower Hutt GP Dr Chris Masters has been a Wellington Free Ambulance Board member since August 2022. Learn more about Dr Chris, including why he decided to join our Board.

I’ve been a Wellington Free Board member since…

August 2022, so I’m just coming to the end of my first year. I had been a member of the Clinical Governance Committee for approximately two years prior to that.

How I became a Wellington Free Board member was …

I had been on the Clinical Governance Committee (CGC) for a couple of years. When Dr Ken Greer, who was a Board member, decided to retire I was asked to fill his position on the Board and as Chair of the CGC.

I decided to become a Board member because…

It was an easy decision. I had valued my time on the CGC and had seen what a fantastic organisation WFA was. I have an interest in governance of community healthcare providers and hoped that I could contribute to the governance of WFA.

My most memorable experience as a Board member has been…

It’s been a relatively short time on the Board to date, but the Wairarapa Station project has been exciting to see go from planning to implementation. It’s also greatly satisfying being involved in the strategic planning process, particularly at this current time with the challenges faced in the health sector.

When I’m not fulfilling my Board duties, I…

Am a GP at Ropata Health in Lower Hutt, having been here for nearly 25 years. I’m also involved in the governance of another community healthcare provider, NZ Health Group, who are a larger provider of home care support services, disability services and rehabilitation.
