Introducing Graduate Intern: Alex Daniel

Introducing Graduate Intern: Alex Daniel

Working at Wellington Free Ambulance has been a real eye opening experience for Graduate Intern Alex Daniel.

Alex Daniel, Graduate Intern

"From holding a newborn baby while they take their first breath to holding the hand of someone while they take their last, or just making a cup of tea for an elderly lady because they have fallen over in the night and needed a hand up. Every job is special and carries different emotions and learnings,” she says.

As a Kāpiti Coast local, Alex has always wanted to work amongst the community she grew up in.

She joined as an Event Medic while studying at Whitireia as a way to gain more experience in addition to the on-road time she got as a student.

“I feel incredibly privileged to have this job. To see the vulnerable sides of people and be there in their time of need, and to be here for them if they ever need help is a great feeling.”

Alex explains she’s looking forward to expanding her medical knowledge and gaining further experience as the year progresses.

“My preceptor, Chad, has been patient, kind and a great support while I’ve navigated my way through these first six months on the job. The team [her Brown Shift colleagues] are also awesome to work with. Everyone has been incredibly welcoming and made me feel included from day one,” she says.

One thing Alex enjoys about the job is that there is no normal.

“Some days we start the moment we park our car; we don’t even make it through the station door. Other times we can take our time and enjoy a cup of coffee before the day actually starts.

“The thing is you can never pick what kind of day it’s going to be. You just have to be prepared for anything.”
